Great Greenwashing: Regulatory Capture and Electric Utilities

This series of three posts will use the states of North Carolina, Arizona and Florida as examples of ‘regulatory capture’ – i.e. where there are close ties between the regulators and the utilities they oversee. This first post covers regulatory agencies in North Carolina and Arizona. The second and third posts will cover utilities’ plans to add climate-wrecking natural gas plants – mostly with fracked gas --  and discourage or even outlaw solar power. Good Bye Fossil Fuel Energy—Really!

With Our Renewable Future we did a thought experiment-- if we are moving toward a future that’s powered mostly by solar and wind, what would that look like? Just for the sake of the thought experiment, let’s exclude other energy sources like nuclear, and let’s exclude fossil fuels all together. How would we get to a renewable future, and what would be some of the challenges we would face along the way?

A Trial Lawyer Finds his Mission in Life… Stopping Climate Change and Saving the World, That Is.

Bill Blancato has spent his 32-year career as a trial lawyer in Winston-Salem, NC. A native of New York City, Bill attended Queens College, majoring in economics and received his JD at Duke University Law School in Durham, NC. Over the last three years, he has found the threat of climate change compelling. Consequently, he has taken up the cause of establishing a revenue neutral fee on fossil fuels to gradually reduce the market for these greenhouse gases to benefit and encourage the adoption of clean, renewable energy such as solar and wind, and energy efficiency. Over the last three years, he has, along with several others, established North Carolina as a strong supporter of the Carbon Fee and Dividend plan of the national Citizens’ Climate Lobby. He has more recently joined the Board of Directors of The Climate Times.

Dr. George Woodwell, Climate Science Pioneer, Woods Hole Research Center

Dr. George Woodwell, ecologist, is one of the first American scientist to blow the whistle on what almost all (97%) scientist now fully accept as world-wide climate change. Beginning in the late 1960's, he was studying the effects of C02 on forests. As he integrated this knowledge with the latest data on C02 atmospheric concentrations from the pioneering monitoring work of Dr. Charles David Keeling in Hawaii, he developed a well-reasoned theory of how increasing carbon in the Earth's atmosphere from fossil combustion was effected the entire biota of life on Earth as it warmed our planet.
